Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are
not allowed to have armless
variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Nordeste municipality had 5291 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 9
communes covering 101,51 km², taking up the NE half of
St. Michael Island (São Miguel). It is part of
Azores Region (also a NUTS II and traditional
province), former Angra do Heroísmo
District. "Nordeste" is Portuguese for "northeast", refering to
the location of this municipality, which is not hinted at in the arms.
