Introduction of Palaçoulo

Like all toponyms in the municipality, this commune has two names: Palaçoulo in Portuguese and Palaçuolo in Mirandese (the local syncretic dialect complex of Asturian-Leonese, co-official language of Portugal and given a standard orthography), each is the translation of the other and both mean small palace or manor house — not depicted in the arms, as neither the local’s detested exonimous nickname "caramonicos", which refers to their legendary dim wits and fear of the devil. In spite of the bilingual status, the scroll of the CoA is not bilingual, according to the law. The names in brackets are Mirandese.
