It is a fairly typical portuguese municipal flag,
with the coat of arms centered on a plain
red background. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official
journal Diário da República
: III Série in 1986.06.11, a remarkably late date.

The arms are Argent a lion Gules and eight fig leaves Vert. Mural crown
argent with four visible towers (town rank) and
white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Vila de Figueira de Castelo
Rodrigo". "Figueira" means "(common) fig (tree)", which makes the arms
partly canting.

Vale de Afonsinho Commune is one of the 17 communes of
Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo Municipality; it had 122
inhabitants in 2001 and covers 13,79 km².
