City Flag

In 1907, Nagano city conducted a study to find an appropriate symbol for the city. In October, 1907, the "Maruhachi" (circle 8) symbol was selected by the city assembly. This symbol reportedly was used by the Owari Tokugawa clan. The symbol has been included on the city flag.
Dov Gutterman, 3 April 1999

The city flag was adopted on Mar 29th 1967 by the Municipal Notice No 27. It is a white flag charged with dull green city emblem in the center. The flag proportions are 2:3.
The dull green color is made to be mixed blue of beautiful sky and clear water of Nagano and green of trees and grasses giving people an ease. It symbolizes the figure of the city which makes a rapid progress and rich development to the future with civic harmony and solidarity while living together with nature. The city emblem is round shaped stylized kanji 長 NAGA. The modern form represents the image of a new city and its depth and tone.
