Stankovci is located some 50 km south-east of Zadar, in the hinterland of Pirovac.
The place was location of heavy fighting around the fort of Velim between the Venetians and Turks in the 16th-17th centuries, after which a new population was settled there, led by Franciscans. It is believed that Velim was the birthplace of St. Nikola Tavelić (also known as St. Nicholas Tavigli, 1340-1391), who is the first saint of Croatian origin, honoured as a martyr already in the 14th century, blessed in 1889 and canonized in 1970.

The symbols of Stankovci are described in Articles 5 (coat of arms) and 6 (flag) of the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Stankovci (pročišćeni tekst) (text), adopted on 12 September 2009 by the Municipality Assembly
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, dark blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
