Presentation of Stankovci

Stankovci is located some 50 km south-east of Zadar, in the hinterland of Pirovac.
The place was location of heavy fighting around the fort of Velim between the Venetians and Turks in the 16th-17th centuries, after which a new population was settled there, led by Franciscans. It is believed that Velim was the birthplace of St. Nikola Tavelić (also known as St. Nicholas Tavigli, 1340-1391), who is the first saint of Croatian origin, honoured as a martyr already in the 14th century, blessed in 1889 and canonized in 1970.
