Vinodol is the only municipality in Croatia that has its name in adjective form, for historical reasons. Therefore the name in Croatian is formally Vinodolska Općina (The Municipality of Vinodol). The seat of the municipal administration is the place named Bribir, the home town of the very important family of Frankopan, Dukes of Krk and Bribir.

The flag of Vinodol is described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Vinodolske, adopted on 15 March 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 May 2006 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 19.
The symbols were rejected by the Ministry of Administration, probably so many other municipalities and towns that have historical connection to the Frankopan already show some of their symbols, and are no longer described in the 2009 Municipality Statutes.
The flag is described as in proportions 1:2, "petroleum green" with the coat of arms in the middle.
The coat of arms, designed by G. Blažević, from Novi Vinodolski, is in the traditional shape of the coat of arms of Bribir, adapting the contents, as "Azure a valley with steep mountains vert beneath it a barrulet wavy also azure and in the base a bunch of grapes or slipped and with two leaves vert and in the chief a mullet or".
The mullet is a reference to the Frankapan. The arms are canting, Vinodol meaning "The Wine Valley".
