The Municipality of Mrkopalj, with just under 2,000 inhabitants, is located some 30 km east of Rijeka, 15 km south of Delnice. Once it was a relatively important trading town in the Gorski Kotar highlands where woods and sheep mostly provided resources.

The symbols of Mrkopalj are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Mrkopalj, adopted on 12 March 1998 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 20 May 1998 in the County official gazette Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 11.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, dark blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms is "Per fess chief per pale: first checky gules and argent, second or a lamb passant below a fir tree vert trunked proper issuant from a base also vert, and third azure five cliff spikes argent".
According to Oštrić [osg02], the arms are a modernized artistic rendition of the coat of arms granted by Emperor Jospeh II in 1785 with the status of Free Royal Market Town. The grant of arms is similar in style with others granted in the period, including the watercolor picture of the coat of arms within a ring containing the inscription (thus making it a seal) and set in a baroque scene with mountains, angel covers, and coats of arms of selected Habsburg lands.
