Presentation of Ribnik

The municipality of Ribnik is located some 25 km north-west of Karlovac. It has under 600 inhabitants, the place of the same name counting only a bit over 100, the other living in 16 smaller villages.
The municipality was formed in 1997 by parts of Žakanje.

Flag of Ribnik

The symbols of Ribnik are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Ribnik, adopted on 9 October 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 16 October 2006 in the County official gazette Županijski glasnik Karlovačke županije, No. 30.
The symbols are described in Articles 8 and 9 of the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Ribnuk, adopted on 13 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 14 July 2009 in Glasnik Karlovačke županije, No. 22.

The final paragraph of the Decision states that the Decision shall be valid only after approval by the Ministry of Administration and shall be published only then in the gazette, which eventually happened.

The flag is described in Article 9 of the Decision as follows:

The flag of the Municipality is of a single colour, green, with a ratio of length to width of 2:1, in accordance with the legal prescriptions.
In the middle of the flag at the crossing point of the diagonals is the coat of arms of the Municipality, printed on both sides of the flag, bordered golden/yellow.

Coat of arms of Ribnik

The coat of arms is described in Article 6 of the Decision as follows:

The coat of arms is in a triangular, heart-shaped shield, on a green field. Top in the chief of the shield a silver/white fish - to the right. Bottom a golden/yellow branch, leaves and fruits of chestnut.

The arms are canting. Ribnik means, more or less, "a fish pond", "a place where fish is grown or where it may be found in abundance", like a good fishing spot on a lake or river. I suppose that a settlement near the fish pond was the origin of the place. I guess that the fish symbolizes river Kupa and the branch and green colour the woods in the region.
