The municipality of Villamontán de la Valduerna (917 inhabitants in 2009; 5,715 ha) is located in the south-east of the Leon Province, 60 km from the provincial capital. The municipality, located in the valley of rover Duerna, is made of the seven villages of Fresno de la Valduerna, Miñambres de la Valduerna, Posada y Torre de la Valduerna, Redelga de la Valduerna, Valle de la Valduerna, Villalís de la Valduerna and Villamontán de la Valduerna.
The toponyms Villalís and Villamontán (Villa Montanus) indicate a Roman colonisation ("villa") of the region; the colony of Argentolium was probably built on the site of today's Miñambres de la Valduerna. In the Middle Ages, the valley was ruled by the lords of los Bazán; Pedro Bazán was made in 1454 Viscount of Palacios de la Valduerna by King Henry IV.
