The municipality of Fresno de la Vega (622 inhabitants in 2009; 1,514 ha) is located in the south-east of the Leon Province, 35 km from the provincial capital.

Fresno de la Vega was mentioned for the first time, in the 10th century, as Fraxino (from Latin, "fraxinus," "ash tree"), in donations made on 25 June 986 and 4 February 989. In the so-called Frexino Chart, dated 16 June 1016, King Alfonso V ordered the transfer of Fraxino from Fromárigo Sendíniz - a malefactor who could not pay the fines required after several crimes and rapes - to Pedro Fernández.

Fresno de la Vega is the home of the pepper known as the Four Moors' Pepper, a local variety of specific brown color and of big size. The local pepper has been celebrated every year since 1984 during the Fresno de la Vega Pepper's Festival, organized in late September.

Description

The flag and arms (and medal, as well) of Fresno de la Vega are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 29 August 2008 by the Municipal Council, signed on 2 September 2008 by the Mayor, and published on 11 September 2008 in the official gazette of Castile and Leon, No. 176, p. 18,124. The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Square flag, tierced by the descending diagonal, the triangle at fly red, the central stripe white and the triangle at hoist red, charged in the middle with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Or a semy of peppers gules an escutcheon argent charged with an ash tree proper terraced vert.
