Description

The flag of Barbate is white with the coat of arms in its centre. I spotted this flag in front of a venta ( a pub located at a road/highway) between Barbete and Conil de la Frontera on 7 November 2009.

Coat of Arms

The shield is divided per fess, both fields fimbriated yellow. The 1st field shows a golden (yellow) mountain in a red field, topped by a cross and accompanied by two (N.B. not specified, but shown as 8-pointed) stars, one in each corner, of the same colour. A third blue star is superimposed on the mountain. The 2nd field shows two silver (white) tunas ordered vertically in a blue field. (N.B. the mountain and cross are in fact light brown.) The shield is topped by a royal coronet.

Source: own observation

The 1st field shows modified ensigns of the order of Carmelitans; the mountain is Mt. Carmel and the stars are referring to St. Mary (Sta. María del Carmen). The 2nd field probably shows modified arms of the dukes of Medina Sidonia, also counts of Niebla.

Barbate was established on 21 October 1949 by General FRANCO as Barbate de Franco. On 11 March 1950 a different coat of arms was granted, according to [dyo69], p.83ff. described as follows:

The shield is divided per fess. The 1st field shows a golden mountain in a blue field. The mountain is topped by a cross and accompanied by two stars, one in each corner, of the same colour. A third blue star is superimposing the mountain. The 2nd field is red, divided by a golden bendy line, which is superimposed by golden dragon wolves tongued red at each end. The ensemble is accompanied by two silver columns having golden Corinthian capitals in the remaining two corners with black inscriptions “PLUS” and “ULTRA”. The shield had a golden border with an inscription in black capitals: “FRANCISCO FRANCO FUNDADOR DE BARBATE”. The shield is topped by a “ducal coronet with pearls” (N.B. the same as a royal coronet).
The 1st field shows the ensigns of the order of Carmelitans, the 2nd field shows the personal arms of F.FRANCO.

According to source on 19 November 1965, the Royal Academy of History suggested a new coat of arms described as follows:

The shield is divided per pale. The 1st blue field shows two kettle checkered golden and red ordered vertically. The 2nd silver field shows two blue tunas ordered horizontally (!). The 1st field shows the arms of Guzman, the 2nd field those ones of the dukesof Medina Sidonia, also counts of Niebla.
The latter however had never been adopted and the 1950 version was kept. The current version was adopted probably after 1975.
