Rhein-Pfalz County Coat of Arms

Shield parted by a bend sinister wavy Argent, above right Sable a sinister facing lion rampant Or armed and tongued Gules, beneath left Azure a Greek cross Argent, over all in centre an inescutcheon Gules charged with two water lily leaves Or with intertwined stems.
Meaning:
Similar arms had already been approved on 18 January 1971. The only difference had been the tincture of the water lilies, which had been green. The lion is a differentiation of that one of the Palatine Counts of Rhein. The white cross on a blue field displays the arms of the Bishopric of Speyer. Both had been the most important rulers of parts of the county in the past. The bend sinister wavy is a representation of the Rhine River. The water lilies are representing the local flora in the abandoned channels of the river. Due to heraldic rules their tincture was changed to golden in 1977. The name of the county had been Ludwigshafen County until 31 December 2003.
