Flag and coat of arms were approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 20 February 1998, published in the roll of arms of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania as no. 0143.

On 4 September 2011 the county merged with Ücker-Randow County and the City of Greifswald forming the new county of Vorpommern-Greifswald.
