Associação Chapecoense de Futebol

Associação Chapecoense de Futebol (ACF - Chapoense) was established on 10 May 1973 as the merger of two local clubs, Clube Independente and Clube Atlético de Chapecó.
Chapoense won seven times the Santa Catarina championship (1977, 1996, 2007, 2011, 2016 and 2017) and the Santa Catarina Cup in 2006.
In 2016, Chapecoense advanced to the final of Copa Sudamericana after having defeated, among others, two noted Argentinian clubs, Independiente and San Lorenazo. On 29 November, the plane carrying the team to Colombia to play the final's first leg against Atlético Nacional de Medellin crashed. This caused the death of 19 out of the 22 players, of the 14 staff members, 9 board members, 20 out of 21 journalists, the 2 VIP guests and 5 out of the other 7 passengers. While the final was "indefinitely postponed", Atlético Nacional required the title to be awarded to Chapeco, which was accepted by COMNEBOL. As a mark of support, the town of Medellin twinned with Chapecó.
