Municipality

The municipality of Videira (53,065 inhabitants in 2019; 38,413 ha) is located 380 km west of Florianópolis. The municipality is composed of the districts of Videira (two sub-districts), Anta Gorda and Lourdes.

Videira was settled in 1918 as Rio das Pedras (Stone River); to attract more colonists, the place was renamed to Perdizes (Partridges) in 1918. The district of Perdizes was established within the municipality of Novo Campo by State Law No. 337 promulgated on 12 April 1927.
The municipality of Videira was established by State Law-Decree No. 941 promulgated on 31 December 1943.
The name of the municipality (Grapevine) recalls that Videira is Santa Catarina's Capital of Grapes and of Sparkling Wine. The local tradition recalls that a bunch of grapes of 1.3 kg in weight was harvested in 1913.

Description of the Flag

The flag and arms of Videira are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 29 promulgated on 14 November 1969.

Article 2.
The coat of arms shall be as follows.
A golden yellow shield composed of a single field. In the central lower part grows a grapevine ["videira"] supported by a shovel surmounted by a straw hat, symbolizing wine-growing and the colonists' field work. At the same level, right a wine flask coated with straw surmounted by a chalice, symbolizing wine and flask production; left a pig's head surrounded by a sausage, representing pig breeding and its improvement via industrialization. In the lateral part, at 2/3 of the shield's width, slanted at 45 degrees, right the symbol of commerce and left the symbol of work planning, both symbols pointing to the center to a cogwheel placed in the shield's upper part and symbolizing all industries in the municipality. In the center of the cogwheel, three golden keys representing the three constitutive powers: the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial, and also symbolizing the three main accesses to the municipality. At the cogwheel's level, two five-pointed stars, one on each side, highlighting the inhabitants' intelligence and eagerness to exert control over institutions and elements. Surmounting the shield's upper border, two stylized fishes representing Fish River that waters the municipal territory. The shield surmounted by a fortified wall with watch towers, symbolizing a united and vigilant municipality. Beneath the shield two cornucopias, symbols of plenty, representing agricultural resources, the development's main base, especially wheat and maize. A scroll with the municipality's name and date of emancipation, supporting two stylized lions with a leopard's head, representing the inhabitants' energy and commitment to common well-being.
Or is a symbol of the soil resources. The colors of the scroll are those of Santa Catarina state.

Article 3.
The flag of the municipality of Videira shall be made of a celestial blue panel charged in the center with a white lozenge inscribing the municipal coat of arms described in Article 2, metals being substituted on the flag by characteristic colors.
