Municipality

The municipality of Encantado (14,277 ha) is located on the right bank of river Taquari, 150 km of Porto Alegre.

Encantado emerged as a colony, mentioned for the first time in 1856 in the Santa Amaro parish records, as a territory of "half a league on more or less one league" owned by Manoel Joaquim da Silva.
In 1878, Colonel José Francisco dos Santos divided the territory in plots to foster colonization. Two Italian families, Lucca and Bratti, were the first official colonists of the place, in 1882. A first wooden church, dedicated to Apostle St. Peter, was erected in 1887 by Father Eugênio Steinnert, from Estrela.

Encantado was elevated to the 2nd district of Lajeado by State Act No. 6 promulgated on 5 January 1892. The municipality of Encantado was established by State Decree No. 2,133 issued on 31 March 1915, composed of the former 2nd (Encantado) and 4th (Anta Gorda) districts of Lajeado and of the former 9th district (Itapuca) of Soledade. The big territory of Encantado was subsequently reduced by the transfer of the district of Nova Bréscia to Arroi do Meio (Decree No. 4,903 issued in 1964) and the political emancipation of the municipalities of Arvorezinha (State Law No. 5,759 promulgated on 28 November 1934), Anta Gorda (State Law No. 4,686 promulgated on 26 December 1963), Ilópolis (State Law No. 4,687 promulgated on 26 December 1963), Putinga (State Law No. 4,689 promulgated on 26 December 1963), Relvado (State Law No. 8,604 promulgated on 9 May 1988), and Doutor Ricardo (State Law No. 10,639 promulgated on 28 December 1905).

The etymology of Encantado is obscure. According to the historians Ferri and Thomé, a native cacique sailing on river Taquari with two fellows came across a white, unspecified figure, which soon disappeared in the river's depth; accordingly, they named the place Encantado, "Enchantered".
