National flag days

The Belgian national flag shall be hoisted on public buildings on official days, and can also be hoisted for important ceremonies, when locally customary, or for the visit of the head of a foreign state.

The official days are :

  • 7 April: Hommage to the Belgian soldiers deceased during peace-keeping missions
  • 1 May: Labour Day
  • 5 May: Day of the Council of Europe (created in 1949)
  • 8 May: Victory of the Allies in 1945 and end of the Genocide
  • 9 May: Europe Day (anniversary of the founding speech of the European Union, given by Robert Schuman in 1950)
  • 6 June: Birthday of King Albert II (born in 1934)
  • 11 June: Birthday of Queen Fabiola (born in 1928)
  • 2 July: Anniversary of the wedding of King Albert II and Queen Paola (in 1959)
  • 21, 22 and 23 July: National Day (Oath taking by King Leopold I, on 21 July 1831)
  • 11 September: Birthday of Queen Paola (born in 1937)
  • 24 October: United Nations Day (created in 1945)

  • Movable feast: Elections for the European Parliament (elected by universal suffrage since 1979).
