The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is the state-owned company whose task is to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in Zimbabwe. It was established in 1986 by amalgamating the Electricity Supply Commission (ESC) and the five municipal electricity undertakings which had generated and distributed power in the country since the Electricity Act of 1936.
The ESC was established on 01 July 1936 and was responsible, together with the
municipal power stations initially in Bulawayo and
Salisbury (now Harare), for the generation,
transmission and distribution of electricity in what was then Rhodesia. Later
the municipalities of Gwelo,
Umtali and Gatooma also generated their own
electricity. Following the independence of Zimbabwe in 1980, a new Electricity
Act in 1985 established the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority
(ZESA) by amalgamating the ESC with the municipal undertakings to provide a
unified electricity supply service.

The flag of ZESA is based on that of its predecessor, the ESC, and comprises three vertical stripes of dark blue, white and dark blue, with the company emblem in the centre of the white stripe.

The emblem originally adopted by the ESC was amended following the establishment
of ZESA in 1986. The shield, showing elements used to generate electricity,
remained. The Zimbabwe Bird replaced the Griffin as the crest and the
scroll added new company acronym.

Electricity Supply Commission flag

The flag of the Electricity Supply Commission (ESC) was a vertical tribar of
dark blue, white and dark blue with the Commission logo in the centre of the
white stripe. The flag and emblem were replaced in 1986 following the
creation of ZESA.
