The flag stands for a social media group and an internet meme, founded by Kamil Dyszewski from Poland
on 24 May 2022.
Meanwhile it has several thousand members from different countries. This movement is
dedicated to countering Russian propaganda
and disinformation about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In addition to posting irreverent commentary about the war and
memes promoting Ukraine or mocking the
Russian war effort and strategy, the group also raises funds for the Ukrainian military and
other
pro-Ukrainian causes. The representation character or mascot of NAFO is a "Fella", a Japanese
Shiba Inu dog, often used as an
avatar and
sometimes described as a "cartoon dog". The Shiba Inu breed has had an unrelated significant
presence in online culture
since at least 2010 as the Doge meme.
On their flag webshop they offer amid a variety of
different flags also their "Classic
Flag",
which can also be called their official flag. With its logo and design it mimicks the
NATO/OTAN design. The flag also displays three
faces of the "Fella" meme, which peek out over the
edges of the flag and the letters "O".

The NAFO 69th Sniffing Brigade has been founded by members of Ukraine and Estonia. They see themselves
as a part of the larger
NAFO community. Its main activity consists of donating used and repaired trucks
and pick-ups to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Their flag and patch show the "Fella" meme with combat gear in front of a military camouflage pattern.
Attached on his uniform are
a shield with the Ukrainian arms and an Estonian national flag. The writings
are "NAFO" (above) and "69TH SNIFFING BRIGADE" (below).
