Discussion: The Russia Flag (Флаг Россия)

Editor's Note: Россия is Cyrillic for "Russia." and Флаг means "Flag."

My mother in law visited Russia recently and she brought back 2 table flags for my collection. One is the usual white blue red while the second, is the tribands defaced with the arms centered over the name "Russia" in Cyrillic. It probably is just a flag more attractive for the tourists.

It looks like it might be the sort of flag waved by sports fans at football matches. Attractive, though - despite the writing.

This table "incorrect" flag (usually, made in China) is very popular in Russia. They are made not only for foreign tourists. For example, bus drivers like them, they usually decorate the windscreen with one or two such flags. Sellers think these flags are more beautiful that the official national flag. The flags are not official, of course.

The Russian Federation embassy in Lisbon has a number of these in (tacky!) indoor displays featuring (plastic) flower arrangements and posters showing cultural landmarks and nature landscapes. Of course an untainted tricolor flies on the main balcony and hangs indoors in the appropriate places. I guess this is not different from other Russian embassies and consulates around the world.

Flags combining a Russian double-head eagle defacing a white/blue/red tricolor are not a rare design for Russian flags. This commercially manufactured Россия variant flag of Russia is not just available as a table flag, but also as a full sized 3' x 5' flag and has remained popular with tourists and visitors to the Russian Federation for many years. It remains well-liked despite being completely unofficial. It also enjoys wide-use on the internet in games, blogs, and social media. Some call it beautiful, some call it tacky, but nobody can deny that it remains very popular.
