Gemert-Bakel is a merger from the former municipalities of Gemert and Bakel en Milheeze (01-01-1997). Settlements: Gemert, Bakel, De Mortel, De Rips, Elsendorp, Handel, and Milheeze. Number of inhabitants: 27.704 (1 Jan 2001); area: 12.362 hectares. Alle villages received coats of arms in 1997, see the Gemert-Bakel municipal website.
On 18 Nov 1998 the municipal council adopted the flag of Gemert-Bakel, Description: quartered over one third of flaglength of yellow, red, white and red, over de quartering a crodd with arms with width of 1/4 flagheight, to the hoist black, to the fly white, and in the canton a black eagle with height of 1/3 flagheight.
