Shimazu Toyohisa

1570-1600

by Jaume Ollé

In 1587, he succeeded his father's estate and became the lord of Sadohara in Hyuga Province. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he joined the Western force. He retreated through the enemy and died in place of uncle Shimazu Yoshihiro. The war banner has black background with two Shimazu’s Kamon family emblems of white cross in a circle. It is said that the cross in the family emblem was originally believed to be a sign of good luck and to ward off trouble, and that this became the flag device.
