The Department of Visual Arts was established at the Pedagogy Academy in Rijeka in 1963, which became part of the newly established University in Rijeka in 1973. The Academy became the Faculty of Pedagogy in 1977, which became the Faculty of Philosopy in 1998 and the Department for Arts Education and Visual Arts. In 2003 the Department was divided, a part remaining at the Faculty as the Art History Department and the rest becoming the current Academy.

The Academy Statutes Statut Akademije primijenjenih umjetnosti Sveučilišta u Rijeci [pročišćeni tekst] (text), adopted on 24 March 2014, do not prescribe any symbol.
The Academy, however, uses an emblem consisting of geometric shapes "voiding" the initials "APU" in cyan (up-pointing isosceles triangle), magenta (semicircle and square) and yellow (upright rectangle with semicircular bottom).
