The municipality of Dirfys-Messapia (18,800 inhabitants in 2011; 77,990 ha) was established in the 2011 local government reform as the merger of the former municipalities of Dirfys (7,308 inh.) and Messapia (13,756 inh.).

The name of Messapia derives from the ancient river Messapios. The seat of the municipality was in Psachna (Ψαχνά, 6,350 inh.).

The flag of Messapia (Kokkonis website) was white with the municipality name and emblem, and the date "1838".
