Saint-Varent (2,397 inhabitants in 2020; 3,442 ha) is a commune of the Deux-Sèvres department.

Flag of Saint-Varent

The flag of Saint-Varent is white with the coat of arms: (photo, 2013).
The commune is twinned with Saint-Michel-des-Saints in Québec, hence the Québec flag near the city hall.

The arms are blazonned: Vert a pall Or between in chief an escallop, dexter a millwheel and senester a millrind, all Argent, overall an inescutcheon Argent chaussé Azure, a bridge of three arches Sable masoned Argent on river of the same issuant from the base.

The coat of arms of the municipality was created in July 2007 by the Société héraldique pictave, taking into account the wishes of the municipality in place, whose mayor was Michel Le Fur. In order to highlight the richness of the heritage of Saint-Varent on a coat of arms considered to be timeless, different themes had been chosen: rurality; the three roads that lead to Saint-Varent (from Parthenay, Bressuire, Thouars); the chaplaincy, tangible proof of the passage of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela; the four watermills; the five windmills; the medieval bridge called the old bridge; the Thouaret river. A representation of the diorite and granite quarries had also been requested (source: Ouest-France).
