Presentation of Maintenon

The municipality of Maintenon (4,296 inhabitants in 2014, 1,144 ha), is located on river Eure, 20 km northeast of Chartres.
Maintenon is well known for its picturesque castle, first home to the d'Angennes family, Marquis de Maintenon, later home of Madame de Maintenon (1635-1719), the morganatic second wife of King Louis XIV (1683). The ruins of the aqueduct of Maintenon, built by Louis XIV to carry water from river Eure to the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, are still standing.
