Hersfeld-Rotenburg County Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale into silver (= white) and red. The dexter side displays a red patriarch's cross (like a cross Lorraine). The sinister side displays a silver (= white) seedling of linden tree having three leaves.
Meaning:
The dexter half displays the arms of the former Hersfeld County. The "double cross" already appears on seals of the Abbey of St. Simon and Judas Thaddeus since 1217. In the approval the cross was related to Bishop Lullus of Mainz, founder of Hersfeld Monastery around 770. The powerful Imperial Abbey of Hersfeld was parted away from the city of Hersfeld in 1373 and was dissolved during the Protestant reformation in Germany. The territory was administrated by Hesse since 1606 and finally incorporated in 1648. The sinister side displays a modified version of the arms of the city of Rotenburg and is representing the former Rotenburg County. Both counties merged on 1 August 1972.
