Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, standing on an base Vert, a woman dressed and nimbed Argent, crowned Or with fair (= Or) hair, fixed at crown a veil Gules. She is holding a sword Argent in her left hand and a wheel Or in her right open hand. She is accompanied by an impending inescutcheon Or three chevrons Gules at dexter and five 6-point stars Or at sinister ordered per pale wavy (at least according to blazon).
Meaning:
Steinau gained market privileges and city rights in 1290 from King Rudolf I. The arms show St. Catherine, patron saint of the city, with her attributes sword and wheel. The inescutcheon displays the arms of the Counts of Hanau. Nearly the same pattern, but with only the dexter half of the inescutcheon, is known since the 15th century on a city seal. The stars are a later addition, their meaning is not known. In the 18th century the wheel was often shown as an orb for unknown reasons. The half inescutcheon was replaced by the full inescutcheon probably in 1978.
