Municipality

The municipality of Paulo Bento (2,308 inhabitants in 2017; 14,828 ha) is located 380 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Paulo Bento was settled by the brothers Paulo and Manoel Bento de Souza around 1890, where they established the oldest domain in Alto Uruguai, locally known as Posse dos Bentos (The Bentos' Possession). Around 1915, the Companhia Particular de Colonização, led by Dr. Azambuja in Passo Fundo, sold plots, on the government's behalf, to colonists coming from Europe and from the Serra Gaúcha.
The town was designed in 1928 by Torres Gonçalves. First named Sede Cravo, it was renamed to Paulo Bento, as a tribute to the place's first settler. Paulo Bento was elevated to the 4th district of Getúlio Vargas by Municipal Act No. 113 issued on 25 March 1935. It was transferred to the newly formed municipality of Erechim as its 1st district, established by Municipal Decree No. 7,199 issued on 31 March 1938.
The municipality of Paulo Bento was established on 16 April 1996 and inaugurated on 1 January 2001.
