The motto-like inscription "A-Ma-Ngao" confirms that this settlement was named after Macao, that being the Cantonese etym (亚妈港 | Aa³maa¹ Gong², meaning "Harbour of the goddess A-Ma") of the Portuguese name ("Macao" in pre-1911 spelling, "Macau" afterwards) - see also http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/1911_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica/Macao
