The municipality of Acará (53,605 inhabitants in 2010; 4,344 sq. km) is located in northeastern Pará.

Acará originates in the parish of Moju, established by Provincial Law No. 14 of 9 September 1839. Moju and Cairari were incorporated to the municipality of Capital by Provincial Law No. 441 of 20 August 1864. Provincial Law No. 839 of 19 April 1875 established the municipality of São José de Acará, seceding from Moju and inaugurated on 23 March 1876. The municipality was suppressed and its territory incorporated to Belém by State Decree No. 78 of 27 December 1930. Acará was reestablished as an independent municipality by State Decree No. 579 of 8 January 1932. The district of Tomé-Açu was made an independent municipality by State Law No. 1,127 of 11 March 1955, but the Law was invalidated on 4 October 1955, deemed unconstitutional by the Federal Supreme Court. The municipality of Tomé-Açu was eventually established by State Law No.1,725 of 17 March 1959. The district of Tailândia was made an independent municipality by State Law No. 5,452 of 10 May 1988. Acará is the birth town of the aeronautics pioneer Júlio César Ribeiro de Sousa (1843-1887).

The flag shown at the top of this page appears to be a banner of the municipal arms, supporters and scroll excluded. So it appears, waving, in the logo of the municipality.

Oddly enough, the "Symbols" page of the municipal website shows another flag, horizontally divided green-white-red with the yellow sun in the middle and with the coat of arms placed on a white rectangle in canton.
