Description of the flag

On 19 January I attended a function at Western Australia's Parliament House to celebrate its centenary. At the ceremony a special centenary flag was raised outside Parliament House. 2004 also happens to be the 175th anniversary of Western Australia and the 150th anniversary of the first stamp issued by Western Australia.

The flag features the Southern Cross in the third(?) closest to the flag pole. The stars are in yellow on black, and appear to be identical to the Southern Cross on the Australian flag. In the other two thirds is the black swan in black on a yellow background. The swan is the same as the current WA state flag, and the yellow is the same shade. The proportions of the flag seem to be 1:2. The flag will be flying outside Parliament with the Australian and Western Australia flags during 2004.

The "centenary flag" is based on the same idea as the ACT and NT flags. This flag is in fact similar to the ideas many people have had for a set of new state flags based on the model with the ACT/NT hoist with southern cross and some sort of badge in the fly. Of all the states, this model is probably most successful in WA, where the result is as you see striking and definitely more identifiable than the current blue ensign state flag.
