It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.

Shield Argent, in base a mountain issuant Sable crowned by a calvary Purpure, flanked by an impending fleur-de-lis Azure at dexter and an impending corn cob Or leaved Vert at sinister. . Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black capitals: "ATALAIA - MONTIJO".
Meaning:
The fleur de lis is an attribute of Our Lady of Atalaia, the local patron saint. The cob is symbolizing agriculture, the Calvary is symbolizing a local sanctuary. Finally the mountain is representing the highest elevation in the area.

Atalaia Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Montijo Municipality (q.v.); it had inhabitants 2256 in 2011 and covered 2.65 km².

Shield Argent, in central chief a cross Gules of the Order of St. James, flanked by a cogwheel Azure in dexter centre and a corn cob Or leaved Vert in sinister centre, in base a pine eradicated Vert fruited Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black capitals: "ALTO ESTANQUEIRO - JARDIA".
Meaning:
The region belonged to the Order of St. James, represented by its cross. The cogwheel is symbolizing industry and the cob agriculture. Pines are the predominant species of trees in the region. Drafts designed by Joaquim Baldrico and Fernando Simões.
