About the flag

Academia Lusitana de Heráldica (A.L.H.) - "Lusitanian" being a faint poetic way to say "Portuguese" -organizes monthly evening meetings (every last Monday) in Lisboa, where usually a lecture is presented and discussed; the range of covered matters is wide, naturally centred on Portuguese Heraldry. A.L.H. is also involved in the organization of larger Heraldry meetings and in publishing.
The Lusitanian Heraldry Academy adopted originally an emblem, which depicted a silver shield with five escutcheons set in cross with the lateral ones pointing to the centre, each charged with eleven plates, set 3:2:3:2:1. Since these were the arms of the King of Portugal until 1248, inversion of colours was made to avoid unwanted usurpation. A blue flag with the older emblem is still in display.
The arms of the Lusitanian Heraldry Academy are azure five escutcheons argent set in cross with the lateral ones pointing to the centre each charged with eleven roundels of the field, set 3:2:3:2:1. (editorial note: the inescutcheons turned to silver, each one displaying 11 huerts [blue discs]) Ogival shield hanging "au valon", helmet argent looking dexter padded gules and charged with a cross fleury of the same, torse and mantling azure and silver, for crest a wyvern azure armed and langued gules holding upright a herald's staff argent. This representation of the arms on and over a silvery ring with "Academia Lusitana de Herálldica" written in blue serif capitals all around is placed on a white 2:3 background to make the Academy's flag. All this masterly drawn and painted by the skillful hand of Master José Colaço.

This flag was produced in a suitable number of copies and is hoisted indoors during academic activities. Some members have expressed a preference to change this to a banner of arms.
