Ambt Montfort municipality

Montfort or Ambt Montfort is a municipality southwest of Roermond. In medieval times it was part of Gelre; there count Reinaut II kept his father prisoner in 1326. The Grauwert ('grey fort'), the castle, where that happened, was slightened in 1794.
The new municipality of Ambt Montfort was formed by the merger of the former municipalities of Posterholt, Montfort and Sint Odiliënberg on 1 January 1991. It has 11.000 inhabitants, mainly living in three villages with the same names as the former municipalities.

Ambt Montfort Coat of Arms

[Ambt Montfort Coat of Arms] image from this website.

Granted by Royal Resolution 25 april 1991.
The Coat of Arms of the former municipality of Posterholt was mainly used for the municipal arms of Ambt Montfort, because this was the only one of the three former municipalities, which contained bars (fesses). The castle of Montfort is represented in the new Coat of Arms by the pinnacles on the center bar. From the arms of St. Odiliënberg the three five-leaves have been taken and positioned on the top blue bar.
Information from the municipal site.
