Overview

The parish of Tarqui is part of the Manta canton (Manabí province).
Tarqui was the first urban parish established in Manta. The Municipal Ordinance of 12 February 1929 granted the status of parish to the borough of La Ensenadita, which was renamed after the Battle of Tarqui (27 February 1829); the parish was expected to be inaugurated on 27 February 1929, to celebrate the centenary of the battle. During the Battle of Tarqui, 4,000 soldiers from Gran Colombia defeated and repelled 8,000 soldiers of the "southern enemy", that is, Peru. The delay between the application and the expected date of inauguration was too short; however, the erection of the new parish was validated by Provincial Decree No. 328 of 20 August 1929. This allowed the inauguration of the parish on 9 October 1929, the anniversary of the Guayaquil Proclamation (1820) that started the struggle for independence.
