Sehnde Coat of Arms

Shield Gules with bordure Or, a lion's head Or tongued Azure.
Meaning:
The lion's head is the rest of a lion passant in the chief of the former arms. It is alluding to "Das große Freie", a territory of 14 villages colonised by yeomen.
The arms probably were approved in 1974, when Sehnde incorporated a few minor municipalities.

Höver Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess; above Gules a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Gules; beneath Or an oak twig Vert having three leaves.
Meaning:
The lion had been already a symbol of "Das Große Freie", a "County of Freemen". (for more details (in German) see German WIKIPEDIA), literally "the large free (area)". Some say that the area was populated by Franconian settlers just in the middle of Saxony, as Frank (=the Franconian) is a synonym of Frei (= free) in German. To the organisation belonged 14 municipalities in the Nordwald Forests between Hannover, Hildesheim and Peine. In 1248 the area became a part of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Thus since the 14th century the lion of the Welfen kin was displayed in local common seals of all the 14 municipalities. The oak leaves are representing the Gaim area, a large local oak-forest. The flag colours are a repetition of the tinctures of the lion.

The arms were approved on 22 August 1939. The flag was in use at least since 1954 and abolished in 1974 together with the arms.
