Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (=yellow) field is a black, rampant, double queued, crowned lion, armed and tongued red. The lion is superimposed by silver (=white) bend.
Meaning:
According to source the arms are known from a seal from the late 13th century. The lion should be that one of Heinsberg. But the seal got lost and when the Heinsberg dominions became part of the Duchy of Jülich in 1484, the lion was considered as being related to the lion of Jülich, i.e. black lion in golden field. The bend is said to be a distinguishing mark.
The style of the lion was renewed, probably in 1972. The tinctures of crown, claws and tongue sometimes had been different in older versions.
The plain banner probably is related to §2(1) of local Hauptsatzung version 22 November 2006, where is mentioned that the municipality has "the right to bear a flag per tradition".
