The ratio probably was 5:3 (rectangular, height longer than width). It is an armorial flag showing three red merlettes ordered horizontally in a yellow field.

Description of banner:
It is a red - yellow - red vertical triband with ratio 1:3:1. The coat of arms is shifted to the top.

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a golden(=yellow) rammer. The chief is golden(=yellow) showing three red merlettes ordered horizontally. The chief of the current arms had been the former coat of arms of Velen.
Meaning:
According to source the rammer was canting and taken from the arms of former municipality of Ramsdorf. The merlettes had been the arms of the counts of Velen.

Banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Münster on 14 November 1977, the old versions by minister of interior of Northrhine-Westphalia on 17 November 1961.
