Municipality

The municipality of Toropi (2,952 inhabitants in 2010; 20,298 ha) is located 350 km north-west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Toropi (seat) and Linha Bonita.

Toropi is named for river Toropi, in Tupi-Guarani "armadillo's path". This refers to the river's sinuous course, which recalls an armadillo zig-zagging when running away.

Symbols

The flag of Toropi is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 54 promulgated on 23 June 1997.

Article 1.
The flag of the municipality of Toropi has for official colors, blue, white and green, and is composed of three panels, as inspired by the flag of Brazil, representing:
a) Green (vert) is a symbol of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, abundance, and hope, since mountains and greening fields promise profuse harvests.
b) White is a symbol of peace, friendship, integration, work and community's harmony.
c) Blue (azure) is a symbol of justice, perseverance, zeal, loyalty, royalty and community's harmonization in search of communitary objectives, and of rivers. It also represents beauty and recreation.

Article 2.
The flag shall obey the following rules.
I - Composed of three panels, blue, white and green in usual shades.
II - The flag's width shall be 14 units.
III - The flag's length shall be 20 units.
IV - The distance between the lozenge's points and the flag's borders shall be 1.7 unit.
VI - The flag is composed of two blue stripes of 5 units in width in the upper and lower parts.
VII - The flag has a white stripe of 4 units in width in the central part, charged by a green lozenge.
VIII - The flag is charged in the center with a white circle, in the middle of the green lozenge, featuring the municipal coat of arms. It is of 3.5 units in radius.

The coat of arms of Toropi is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 53 promulgated on 23 June 1997.

Article 1.
a) A classic Germanic shield surmounted by a mural crown with six towers, four visible. In base on a field vert (green) symbolizing plains, river Toropi that crosses the municipality and is its namesake, an a bovine, representing cattle-breeding. The shield is tierced per bend sinister with the colors of Germany. In chief on a field azure (blue) the symbol of food industry. The shield supported dexter and sinister by tobacco and maize plants proper. On a scroll gules (red) inscribed argent (silver) the toponym "TOROPI" surrounded by dates "28/12" and "1995".

The coat of arms has the following symbolic.
a) The classical Germanic shield adopted to represent the arms of Toropi, originating from Germany and introduced all over Europe during the struggle against the Moors, was much later adopted by other nations, namely to represent domain's heraldry, and finally by Brazilian heraldry, as an evocation of one of the colonizing races that built the nation.
b) The crown surmounting the shield is the universal symbol of domains. Argent with six towers, four visible, it classifies a town of 3rd rank or municipality seat.
c) Argent (silver) is a symbol of peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious feeling.
d) The base vert (green) recalls the plains, divided by a fess azure (blue) representing the municipality's main river, the Toropi, the town's namesake. The green field is charged with a bovine symbolizing an important source of income and the municipality's rural origins.
e) Vert (green) is a symbol of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, abundance, and hope, since mountains and greening fields promise profuse harvests.
f) In chief canton on a field azure (blue) is represented the symbol of food industry, alluding to the potential of increase of the municipality's income.
g) Azure (blue) is a symbol of loyalty, royalty, sky and community's harmonization in search of humanitarian objectives. The shield is tierced per bend sinister with the colors of Germany, black, red and or (gold).
h) Gold (or) is a symbol of royalty, celebrity, greatness, command, force, wealth and knowledge.
h) The outer ornaments represent the main crops produced by the generous and fertile soil, tobacco and maize.
i) The scroll gules (red) is inscribed argent (silver) the identifying toponym - "TOROPI" - surrounded by the dates "28/12", day and month of creation of the municipality and year "1985", year of its political emancipation.
