Municipality

The municipality of Estrela (33,140 inhabitants in 2017; 18,418 ha) is located 120 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Estrela was allegedly named by early colonists who spotted unusual bright light near river Taquari. They believed this was a fallen star ("estrela"), a positive omen, or a sign of the heavens for a rich and happy land. The light was most probably caused by the reflection of moonlight on a swamp.

The Estrela estate, owned by Colonel Victorino José Ribeiro, was settled by German colonists in 1856. A settlement was founded in 1872 by Colonel Vitor de Sampaio Menna Barreto. Miguel Ruschel boosted the development of the town by founding a shop, an hotel and a shipping company.
The parish of Santo Antônio da Estrela was established by State Law No. 857 promulgated on 2 April 1873. The municipality of Estrela was established by State Law No. 1,044 promulgated on 20 May 1876, and inaugurated on 21 February 1882.

The flag was designed by Lauro Reinaldo Müller.
The colors of the flag, taken from the first and fourth quarters of the arms are:
- blue, to represent Brazil's serene sky, which protects us as a small particle of the national soil;
- rose red, as the affirmation of faith and love for the Christian doctrine, or as the symbol of liberty of the Federative Republic, used on the Piratini flag.
- silver (white), to represent the noble, elevated and pacific character of the people, through their example of serenity at any hour.
The triangles represent the three components of distich to the flag of Rio Grande do Sul, which was proposed by an inhabitant of Estrela and became the official flag of the Ragamuffin State, born from a great revolution: Liberty, Equality and Humanity.
This interpretation, which does not appear in the Law prescribing the flag, appears to be a convenient paraphrase of the Law prescribing the coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Estrela, designed by Lauro Reinaldo Müller, is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 243 promulgated on 21 August 1953.

The coat of arms of the municipality of Estrela is composed of a princess' oval shield with its main axis perpendicular.
The shield is divided into four parts, quartered per saltire. The first quarter features a branch of red roses. on a blue field. The rose was chosen since its flowering is most intense in May, the month Estrela was granted political emancipation. Red represents the Christian faith, while blue represents the Brazilian sky.
The second quarter features a colonial house, the old site of the Estrela estate, on a green field representing river Taquari, once the main way of communication.
The third quarter features in the foreground a primitive plow. In the center, a maize cob, in the background a maize field and a bunch of wheat spikes, representing agriculture. The right part features in the background a mallet, an anvil and a cog wheel, representing industry. The field is golden yellow, symbolizing our confidence in the governing institutions, legally established.
The fourth quarter features a torch with red flames, a book resting on a bookshelf, the Southern Cross and Education. The field argent represents the noble, elevated and pacific character of the people.
The shield is surmounted by gold star ["estrela"] surrounded by two florets argent.
