Kabwe was founded as a mining township in 1904 following the discovery of zinc
and lead deposits and originally called Broken Hill. It became a
municipality in 1954 and changed its name in 1966 following the independence of
Zambia. It is located in the centre of the country
and is the capital of Central Province.
