Zululand is one of the 11 district municipalities of the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa with its headquarters being in Ulundi, the former capital of the KwaZulu homeland. The majority of its 804 456 people speak IsiZulu (2001 Census) and the district comprises the local municipalities of Ulundi, Nongoma, Abaqulusi, uPhongolo and eDumbe. Like the other district municipalities in South Africa, Zululand District was created following the re-organisation of local government in South Africa in December 2000.
The flag is a heraldic banner of the shield from its Arms.

The municipal Arms for the Zululand District Municipality were registered with the Bureau of Heraldry on 19 December 2003 under Government Notice No. 1827 and are described as follows:
ARMS: Per chevron coupled, the peaks embattled Argent
and Vert, in chief on a pile Azure, an elephant head caboshed Argent, and in
base on a cehvron embowed embattled Argent a traditional, embellished clay pot
proper. The shield is ensigned of a leopard skin headring heightened of a demi-sun
issuant Gules, voided Argent, charged with a demi indigenous, traditional
beadwork necklace chaplet consisting of coloured and Sable triangles.
SUPPORTERS : Two Trumpeter Hornbills (Bycanistes bucinator)
proper.
SPECIAL COMPARTMENT: A compartment Vert, charged beneath the base of the
shield with two conjoined elephant tusks, the points upwards beside the
respective shield flanks, over the join a set of stringed beads, all Argent.
MOTTO: INQUBEKELA PHAMBILI NGOBUQOTHO.
