Description of the flag

The Town of Vinton (7,782 inhabitants in 2000;3.17 sq. km) is located in Roanoke County. Settled in 1797 as Gish's Mill by the Gish brothers, the area was incorporated into Roanoke County, formed in 1838. Gish's Mill became Gish's Depot after the building of a stop by the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad. In the 1870-1880, the Gish family decided to establish a town at the depot's site; in early 1883, the promoters of the new town adopted the name of Vinton. This name might have been designed as a tribute to the influent Vinyard and Preston families, but it is also said that its origin is Indian. The Town of Vinton was incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly on 17 March 1884, with a population of 584 and a land area of 1.5 square miles.

The flag of Vinton is shown on a photograph published in "Roanoke County Economic Development", 4(1), August 2004, as yellow with the municipal seal in the middle. The Roanoke County flag is said to have been used during the same ceremony but is not shown on the photograph.

It's interesting to note that (thus far, without official confirmation), some of the Town staff knew of the flag, some did not. And the flag hasn't been flown publicly for maybe 10 years or more. The person who knew that the flag really exists said that there are only two flagpoles, which leads me to believe that they don't fly 3 flags from 2 poles - they choose the National and the State flags, and leave the Town flag folded in a storeroom.

The town's police department took part in the 2014 Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police conference that was held in neighboring Salem, Virginia. In photographs from the conference posted on the VACP website, the department's flag is clearly visible, along with the American flag, the Virginia flag, the Virginia State Police flag (previously posted), the Roanoke County Police Department flag, and the Salem city flag.

The Vinton Police Department flag features the town seal in full color centered on a white field that is bordered in dark blue. Circling the centered seal are the words "VINTON POLICE DEPARTMENT" in dark blue serif letters.
