While watching a crime documentary Wednesday night, they showed an interview with a law enforcement officer from the Galveston County
Sheriff's Office in Texas. In the scene, there is a department flag behind the officer. Doing some research online, I found a couple photographs showing the Galveston Sheriff's Office flag. Those can be seen at here, and at the Galveston Sheriff's Office website. The flag of the Galveston County Sheriff's Office features the five-pointed star badge of the sheriff's office centered on a white field with green vertical bars at the fly and hoist.
As a bit of background, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office was formed when the county itself was created in 1838. According to the website, the sheriff has always had responsibility for maintaining law and order in the county and operating the county jail. Interestingly, prior to 1886, the sheriff was also responsible for carry out death sentences, particularly hangings. The Sheriff's Office currently employs more than 430 sworn and non-sworn personnel, and operates the jail, capable of housing nearly 1,200 inmates.
