[Former Flag of Audobon County, Iowa] image by António Martins-Tuválkin, 3 September 2010

Back in 2002, the Iowa State Association of Counties website hosted an account of each county's history, signed by its County Recorder, and illustrated with a black and white flag image. It is not clear whether these flag images were provided by the county administration or not.

Archived copies of the pages about Des Moines County is still at web.archive.org/web/20031206133948 and web.archive.org/web/20031224025550. It is a ~3:5 plain light (white?) flag showing a large emblem drawn in a single darker shade.

This emblem consists of the words "Audubon County", set in two lines with Zapf Chancery, the worth "County" smaller and offset to the fly, an outline map of Iowa with a square marking the county after the "n" of the county name and before the "A" a diamond square logo. Under this lettering a very large image of a bull flanked by captioned icons for local attractions. The bull, slightly stylized, is seen from front-left, with a clear 3D effect given by b/w coloring and angle, and it stands on a base block bearing the caption "Albert the bull", set in serif capitals. It is a representation of a local statue, erected by the beef industry: www.auduboncounty.com/docs/P1010146.jpg and www.auduboncounty.com/docs/Alber%20the%20Bull%209-08%20025.jpg at http://www.auduboncounty.com.

It is accompanied by:

  • A steel wind powered water pump tower, captioned "Nathaniel Hamlin Park", at upper hoist,
  • a statue captioned "The Little Mermaid", at middle hoist,
  • a tree captioned "Plow in the Oak Park", at bottom hoist,
  • a buffalo by a steam with leaping fish, all under two magpies, the scene captioned "Littlefield Recreation Area", at top-middle fly,
  • and a tree standing at a cross-path captioned "Tree in the Middle of the Road", at bottom fly.

Maybe all this drawing is canting?
