BEÜ (website) was established as the Zonguldak Karaelmas University by Law No. 3,837 issued on 11 July 1992, and renamed as Bülent Ecevit University by Law No. 6,287, issued on 11 April 2012. Bülent Ecevit (1925-2006) was Prime Minister of Turkey in 1974, 1977, 1978-1979, and 1999-2002.
BEÜ is composed of 11 Faculties, 6 Schools and 7 Vocational Schools.

The flag of the Zonguldak Karaelmas University (photo) was white with the university's emblem in the center. The writing on the emblem was updated when the university was renamed to BEÜ.

Zonguldak Kömürspor (Zonguldak Kömürspor Kulübü) was established in 1945 as Kömürspor; the club was known as Zonguldakspor from 1966 to 2011.
The club played in the top league between 1974 and 1988, finishing 3rd in the 1979-1980 season and 4th in the 1981-1982 season.
