The Turkish Chamber of Shipping (short form of İstanbul and Marmara,
Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea Regions Chamber of Shipping; Deniz
Ticaret Odası, short form of İstanbul ve Marmara, Ege, Akdeniz,
Karadeniz Bölgeleri [IMEAK] Deniz Ticaret Odası; website) has its headquarters in
İstanbul and main branch offices in İzmir, Bodrum/A>, Marmaris, Antalya,
İskenderun<:A>, Fethiye and Karadeniz Ereğli. It has a Liaison Bureau in
Ankara and representations at all the coastal towns and cities in Turkey.
The Turkish Chamber of Shipping was first established as the İstanbul
Chamber of Shipping in 1982 by a group of Turkish shipowners led by Ziya
Kalkavan; afterwards its area of activities was extended gradually so as
to cover the region of the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean Sea coast and the
Mediterranean coast of Turkey, then finally the Black Sea coast of the
country.
Ziya Kalkavan (1911-1992) was born in İkidere (Rize). In 1949, he established in İskenderun a shipping company, also acting as a shipping
agent and broker. Together with his brothers Feczi and Halis, he
transferred the headquarters of the family business to İstanbul in 1955,
while keeping the direction of the İskenderun branch. The Kalakavan
shipping company was established in 1972.
Ziya Kalkavan was elected President of the Turkish Shipowners'
Association in 1956. He served as the President of the Turkish Chamber
of Shipping from 1984 until his death.
The Turkish Chamber of Shipping is currently presided by another member
of the Kalkavna dynasty, Metin Kalkavan (b. 1959).
