The municipality of Apače was formed in 2006 by secession from the municipality of Gornja Radgona.

The flag and coat of arms of Apače are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Apače (text and drawings), adopted by the Municipal Council on 29 January 2009, and published on 1 February 2009 in the local gazette Uradni glasilo Občine Apače - Prepih, 20/2009.
The flag of Apače is horizontally divided green-blue with the municipal coat of arms near the hoist. The vertical flag is, contrary to what could have been expected, vertically divided blue-green with the coat of arms appropriately rotated and centered in the flag's top square.
The colours are, rather unusually, prescribed ub the RGB hexadecimal system:
- white: #FFFFFF;
- gray #B7B7B8;
- green #008C45;
- blue #12569D (flag field), #12A4DD, #43B2DF;
- brown #986828.
A public contest was organized to design the municipal flag and arms; the deadline for submission was 31 January 2008 but the results
of the competition do not seem to have been published.
The new arms and flag were ceremoniously presented
to the public on 13 March 2009, during the the celebration of the 2nd
Municipal Day (movie, photos). Only the horizontal version of the flag was presented during the ceremony.

Coat of arms of Apače - Image by Željko Heimer, 24 June 2010
The coat of arms of Apače is: "Per fess embowed argent with a mill wheel maroon and vert five wavy 'lines' azure." The "lines" or "smudges" are unblazonable.
