I passed by a place called Hästholmen in the county of
Östergötland (Ödeshög municipality, on the shores of Lake Vättern). The reason
for doing so is that I like cities which are no more, or which at least have
lost their one-time importance. Hästholmen was apparently a flourishing centre
in the 13th and 14th centuries, and was granted city status, but has since
become a sleepy village with about 500 inhabitants. At two localities in the
village, I saw a flag with the 14th century "city seal" on a rainbow-like
background. I happened not to have a camera at hand, but a picture can be seen
at the community homepage: http://www.hastholmen.se/.
